Inequality Discussion Group

今日は、"Inequality Discussion Group"に参加させてもらって、CornellのILRの
Brian Rubineauさんの発表を聞きました。
ランチ付きだった。今度から、ミーティングがある月曜日の日は、お弁当なしでいいのねー。

男女のエンジニアの賃金の話。
マサチューセッツで実施した大学卒業生のパネル調査を主に用いて、エンジニア分野で職を見つけた人(stayer)と、その分野から離れて職を見つけた人(leaver)との比較。

stayerとleaverの賃金を比べたら、"stayer>leaver"で、しかも男性の方がそのギャップは高い。その違いがどういった要因で説明できるか、wage decompositionの手法を用いて検討する、という内容だった。

内容も議論もおもしろかったしわかりやすかった。改めて驚いたのは、大学卒業後(2年目)でもエンジニアの学位を持つ人の賃金はとっても高いんだなあ、ということ。平均は男性で$72,237、女性で$58,650。とっても高い人だったら、$140,000(男性)、$100,000(女性)とか...。

改めて、日本の賃金構造とアメリカの賃金構造は違うなあ...と実感した。


Today I joined the "Inequality Discussion Group".

The group is sponsored by the Center for the Study of Inequality.
Those who are interested in the study of inequality get together and discuss
many related topics every two weeks.
Today, Assistant Professor Brian Rubineau of the Industrial and Labor Relations
(ILR) School made a presentation about gander wage gap among engineers.

He conducted a survey of university graduates soon after their graduation and
18 months later, and asked them about their wage, jobs, personality or
family background.
Using the survey data, he compared the wage of the "stayers" who work as
engineers with the wage of the "leavers" who don't work as engineers.
His analysis showed that the stayers earn higher than the leavers, and there is a larger wage gap among men than women.
In other words, women engineers don't earn as high as men engineers, so there
is an only small wage gap between the stayers and the leavers among women.

I was interested in his presentation, and I learned a lot from the discussion.

Also I was surprised that engineers earn very much even soon after their
graduation.
For example, the mean wage of men engineers is $72,237, and the counterpart
of women is $58,650.
The highest wage is $140,000 for men and $100,000 for women.

Japanese engineers cannot earn as high as American engineers.

I think the wage is decided differently in Japan and the US.
